Hi Jim,
This is Kira Harris, Carter and Cindi’s daughter. I know you are a long-time high school friend of my dad’s and you’ve been keeping in touch. I’m so sorry to write with the sad news that my dad passed away earlier this week. I know he enjoyed corresponding with you and especially reconnecting at the reunions in recent years. He had so many stories and cherished memories about his days at Wiesbaden. Thank you for sharing that time with him and keeping in touch.
We’re planning a party in his honor for later in the summer (with music and plenty of beer, of course!). I’ll let you know when we have a date so you can pass that along to all your mates, and if anyone is in the area we would love to see you.
Sincerely,
Kira

What a loss - to us, his family, and society in general. This saddens me, and should serve as a reminder to us all. Waste not! Love all and enjoy our time here.

I echo all the wonderful comments regarding Carter. We had a lot of classes together, we played sports together and most enjoyable, we played in our rock band together along with Bill Haines and Tom Russell.  Carter was a rare individual with so many talents and his greatest talent was being humble and making others feel good and comfortable.  I will miss him but I know his essence will be with me forever.

That is awful news.  I last Carter when he and his wife were staying at Kiawah Island a few years ago-maybe 2017 or 18. They drove over to our island for lunch. I know Jim Lundie drove down to join us, and I think there were others, perhaps Claudia and the Sanders. We had some laughs and shared memories.

   Very sad news.

Carter  and his family lived in the apartment unit adjacent to mine and our families were friends.  I will always remember Carter as causing me my most serious football injury in a drill where they let us clumsy lineman carry the ball and had the backfield tackle us.  Carter and I met head-on, leaving me with a separated shoulder.  A tough guy and a good friend.

What heartbreaking news! I remember Carter playing his drums as if it were yesterday and feel so fortunate that I was able to see him at our Reunion in DC! He will definitely be missed and I will cherish fond memories of him!

This is so sad for me. Carter’s dad, Mark’s dad and Marshe’s dad spent most weekends with my dad on the town in Wiesbaden looking for us where they knew we weren’t. We had so much fun together and spent hours reliving our time together at many of our reunions. Nancy and I would meet Carter and Cindi for lunch every spring when they stayed in Kiawa. I will miss him every day.

Carter’s passing was a shock to all of us.  The love we all shared for him is evident by the responses of fellow classmates. Carter and I were both running for Senior Class President in the Fall of 1963.  I really didn’t think I had a shot as Carter Harris was the class favorite drummer, running back and all-around nice guy.  A few days before the election was our first home football game of the season and early in the game Carter took the ball on an end around sweep and was racing down the sideline with a couple of linebackers in hot pursuit.  I pulled out of my right tackle slot and took off after them throwing myself in front of the attackers taking both of them out as Carter proceeded to the goal line.  I got kicked in the head and Carter went on to score a couple of more touchdowns in the Warrior victory.  Well I thought that was my doom to become class president. Mr Harris was the hero of the game.  I had to come up with something special to even have a chance of competing with him.  Not sure how I would pull it off but I promised a Senior Class trip to Rome and a year end Rhine River Cruise dinner/dance knowing the Class of 64 were Party Animals.  It worked and I quit football that year to pursue my promises and Carter went on to score many more touchdowns.

Rest in peace Carter.  Heaven has a great one!

 ….Matt

Fortunately, we never really lose our heroes, and Carter is one of mine. He was so damn good at so many things! Sure, he had an ego. You can't be that competitive without a little self-belief, but he was smart enough and funny enough not to be arrogant. To me, his entries in my WHS Senior annual really capture why he was one of those that stay with you always. One entry is on the "Most Talented" page that he shared with Su-z Venhorst:

"I may not be very talented, but I am more talented than you are friendly. You son'ch!"

This was directly opposite my photo as so-called "Friendliest",  and he was 100% correct.

You could never doubt Carter's competitive spirit. Once, in the locker room, some guys were comparing leg hair to see who was the hairiest. Carter hoisted his leg up and quipped, "You can't see mine because it's blond, but I'm the hairiest!".

Fortunately, we never really lose our heroes, and here's to you, Carter, you son'ch!

You have all shared such rich reflections, and photos…wonderful.  My most personal memory of Carter was that I had a wild crush on him!  I never let on at the time, I hope, but…there you have it…a 60-year old memory of someone who still evokes vivid recollections.  CB

John OConnor   I am fortunate enough to live within 1 hour 18 minutes (best time on my KTM 1290) from Carter.  Consequently I was able to attend his annual Lakeside Blast reunion of his band from the 70s, The Magneatos, joined by a host of other friends, fans and musicians of our era.It was always a great time, as you all can well imagine. Sadly, Rock n’ Roll Heaven’s gain of another great drummer is our loss.
Rock steady Carter. We miss you…

Dearest Warriors,

Thank you all so much for including me on this email thread and for your kind messages and phone calls. It brings me such happiness and comfort to read your special memories and reflections of my dad. He talked often, and with great fondness about his time with you all and I know he and my mom really enjoyed your reunions in recent years. It has been such a special window into a part of his life I never knew (except of course in his stories!). My mom, Cindi, husband Brian, and I are lifted up by all of you. Thank you for caring deeply about by dad and enriching his life.

For anyone nearby we are planning a party to celebrate Carter’s life here at his home on the lake in Holland, MA on Saturday, July 30th. More details will be coming but for sure there will be music and beer!
